Lisa Oppedal
Lisa Oppedal was born in Torrevieja 21 years ago, with strong Scandinavian roots (Norwegian and Swedish parents), in a multicultural family. She is the perfect example of how commitment and dedication can combine with a demanding education, like the one she received at our school, ELIS Villamartín, since she was three, and which she continues to build on as she studies medicine. At the same time, she has become one of the most promising handball players of her generation, an international with Spain at junior levels and currently playing for the Club Balonmano Elche, which competes in the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola.
Lisa has always stood out for her eagerness to learn and improve in any challenge that came her way, with her vibrant and optimistic character being what best defines her. Step by step, with hard work and, above all, the passion she puts into everything she does, Lisa achieved excellent results in her exams, both at school and in the university entrance test, which enabled her to pursue a medical degree.
She now divides her time between her medical studies at the University of Miguel Hernández and continuing her career as a professional athlete, a path to which she is giving priority. Among her upcoming challenges is being called up to the senior Spanish handball national team.
How is the job going? What is it that you like the most about your work?
Right now, I am working as a professional handball player and combining it with studying medicine. Being a full a time athlete takes up most of my time and for that reason I am required to reduce the number of subjects in a year. I love my job, being an athlete and all the pressure, frustration and reward that comes with it.
To what extent do you think that your training at ELIS facilitated your current professional life?
ELIS has taught me how to be disciplined and how to focus on goals. I am especially grateful for learning English so fluently, I can communicate with all my international teammates and read research papers easily.
What about your spare time? What do you do to enjoy yourself when you’re not working?
Right now, between travelling around Europe and Spain, competing twice a week and combining it with studying medicine, there is little free time... When I don’t play handball I study, and when I don’t study, I play handball. But I love it!!
Where do you see yourself in a few years time?
In a few years I am hopefully playing abroad in Champions League, representing Spain with the national team in major tournaments… I will also be finishing my degree and deciding on what medical specialty I will be focusing on.
