Alumnus of the Year 2022-23

Paul Lapham

Paul is currently 27 years old. He was born in Scotland and moved to Spain with his family at a very young age. He joined ELIS Villamartín in 2008. Paul was a very talented and pleasant student whose sense of community and commitment to the school was remarkable.

He completed his Sixth Form studies with us and studied Maths, Physics and Chemistry A-Level which prepared him for further study at university in Scotland which has resulted in, what it is now, a very successful career.

From the start, Paul was an invaluable member of this very International School and contributed to enriching our culturally diverse setting with his interest for languages and his contributions during his time here.

Paul, how did the possibility of living in Glasgow come about?

I moved home to Scotland after my time at ELIS to go to the University of Glasgow to study Chemistry.

After my masters, having fallen in love with the city and built a great network of friends I decided to stay in Glasgow and pursue a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with a focus on nanoelectronics simulation.

How is the job going?

My PhD has been an enjoyable experience with many challenges, not to mention spending two years of it happening during a worldwide pandemic, but I was very lucky that I could continue making progress.

I have managed to finish my PhD four months early and will submit for my defense early in the new year. I really enjoyed working with people, travelling to conferences and working with new data.

More excitingly, I am due to start a new job in the new year as a Data Analyst for a digital PR company based in London but the job is fully remote. I am excited to leverage all the skills I learned from my PhD in a new field.

To what extent do you think that your training at ELIS facilitated your current professional life?

I really enjoyed my years at ELIS Villamartín and there’s no doubt it played a big role in my development. My experience at ELIS helped me figure out what I was passionate about and how I learn best, which eventually led me to my chosen University.

The biggest advantage of my time at ELIS is I was already so used to being in a very multicultural environment and socializing/collaborating with many different interesting people, like at university but on a smaller scale. This has carried through all the way to now.

What about your spare time? What do you do to enjoy yourself when you’re not working?

I have three main passions in life: food, drink and football. When I am not working I love trying out new food with my fiancée, exploring the vast number of restaurants and coffee shops Glasgow has to offer.

I go to as many live football matches as I can, often with my brother or my fiancée, to my local team Queens Park FC, or when I can get tickets to my beloved Rangers.

Finally, where do you see yourself in a few years time?

I am due to get married this June, so I will be a married man and will have decided on a place to settle down. I hope to have continued to progress my career as a Data Analyst and be passionate about the work I do.

I also plan to make up for the pandemic era by travelling more and seeing the world.
